Why BVLOS Flights Will Transform Drone Operations
For years, UAV operations have largely been confined to what an operator can see from the ground. But as the industry matures, Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations are beginning to redefine what’s possible.
This isn’t just an incremental step forward — it’s a fundamental shift in how UAVs can be deployed at scale.
From Line of Sight to Long-Range Capability
BVLOS operations allow UAVs to travel far beyond the operator’s direct visual range, opening the door to use cases that were previously impractical or impossible.
We’re already seeing real-world applications gaining traction:
● Linear infrastructure inspections (powerlines, railways, pipelines) over tens of kilometres
● Offshore operations, including wind farms and oil & gas assets
● Medical and commercial delivery networks connecting remote or underserved areas
● Environmental monitoring, such as coastal surveying and wildlife tracking
These operations highlight the true value of BVLOS — covering more ground, more efficiently, without compromising access.
The Technical Backbone of BVLOS
Operating beyond visual line of sight demands far more than just extended range.Reliable command and control (C2) links are critical, often supported by cellular or satellite connectivity. Navigation redundancy, detect-and-avoid systems, and real-time telemetry all play a key role in maintaining situational awareness.
Operators must be confident not only in the UAV itself, but in the entire ecosystem supporting the operation.
Navigating a Complex Regulatory Landscape
BVLOS operations sit within a more advanced regulatory framework, particularly in regions governed by
European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
In most cases, operators are required to conduct a Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) —
with the latest methodologies such as SORA 2.5 providing structured guidance on risk mitigation.
This includes:
● Assessing ground and air risk
● Defining operational volumes and contingencies
● Implementing technical and procedural mitigations
● Demonstrating a robust safety case to regulators
BVLOS isn’t simply approved — it’s justified through a detailed and evidence-based approach.
Safety First: The Role of the Operator
For many in the drone industry, BVLOS represents one of the most important developments on the horizon. As technology improves and regulations evolve, these longer-range operations could unlocknew opportunities across logistics, infrastructure inspection, environmental monitoring, and emergency response.
As we transition from the development phase of BVLOS into full commercialisation, these operations will begin to demonstrate the significant commercial and societal benefits they can deliver over the next decade and beyond.
